How to Remove Tree Sap from Decks, Concrete and Siding
Pines, maples and tulip poplars, all common in Middle Tennessee yards, drip sap that collects dirt and turns into dark, sticky spots on decks, patios and cars parked underneath.
Why water doesn't work
Sap is resin, which doesn't dissolve in water. Pressure alone smears it. It needs a solvent or degreaser to break it down first.
Surface matters
On concrete, a citrus-based degreaser works well. On wood decks, go gentle: a deck cleaner with a soft brush, because harsh solvents can strip stain. On siding, use a mild cleaner and test a hidden spot.
Prevention
Trim branches that overhang the deck or driveway, and consider sealing wood and concrete. Sap wipes off sealed surfaces much more easily.
What you can try yourself
- Harden fresh sap with ice and scrape gently with a plastic scraper.
- Dab the residue with a citrus degreaser, let it sit a few minutes, then scrub.
- Rinse with warm soapy water.
What to avoid
- Metal scrapers on wood or composite.
- Paint thinner on painted or stained wood.
When to call a professional
When sap and grime cover a whole deck or patio, a professional cleaning plus fresh sealer makes the surface easier to keep clean afterwards. See our deck & fence cleaning service.

"Estimate process was easy and straightforward. Communication via text and email to setup and confirm the work. Guys came when they said they would and did a great job. Fence and deck were covered in algae and cleaned up great. The patio was mismatched already but it looks amazing now. They hit the windows too which made a big difference. Final invoice came via email right after the work was completed."
