Red Clay Splash on Siding and Concrete After Tennessee Storms
Middle Tennessee soils are high in iron. When hard rain splashes bare dirt onto walls and walks, it leaves an orange stain that water alone won't lift.
Why it stains
The color is iron oxide, basically rust. Regular detergents barely touch it; it needs an iron-safe rust remover.
Prevention
Mulch or groundcover over bare beds and working gutters that don't overflow onto soil cut down on splash.
New construction
New subdivisions with bare lots see the worst of it until lawns fill in.
What you can try yourself
- Rinse fresh splash before it dries.
- Try an oxalic acid-based cleaner on a test spot.

- Bleach, which doesn't remove iron stains.
- Acid on stone without testing.
