In townhome, condo and mixed-use communities, the association sometimes maintains building exteriors — and sometimes doesn't. Check before paying for work that's already covered.
Where to look
Your HOA documents or property manager will say which exteriors, roofs, walkways and patios the association maintains.
Typically private
Private patios, fenced yards and your own driveway are often the owner's responsibility — but confirm in your documents.
Shared areas
Shared walkways, building walls and storefronts should be requested by the association, manager or business responsible.
