How to Clean Pollen Off Your House, Porch and Windows
Each spring a yellow-green coat covers cars, porches and windowsills across Williamson County. Pine and oak pollen are sticky, and when they mix with rain they leave film and streaks on siding and glass.
Time it right
Tree pollen in Middle Tennessee usually peaks in late March through April. Washing your house in the middle of peak season means doing it twice. Most homeowners get the best result washing once the heaviest pollen has dropped.
Why pollen stains
Pollen is oily and feeds mildew. Left on shaded siding and screens through a humid May, it becomes the starting point for summer growth. That's why a spring wash matters more here than in drier climates.
Don't forget screens and sills
Screens trap pollen and keep windows looking dirty even after the glass is clean. Remove them, rinse with a hose and a mild soap, and let them dry before reinstalling.
What you can try yourself
- Rinse porches and furniture with a garden hose. Pollen comes off easily when fresh.
- Wash screens with a soft brush and mild soap.
- Clean glass on a cloudy day so it doesn't streak.
What to avoid
- Dry wiping windows. Pollen is abrasive and can scratch.
- Pressure washing screens, which tears the mesh.
