How to Clean Gutters Safely (and How Often in Tennessee)
Gutters exist to move water away from your foundation. When they clog with oak leaves, pine needles and seed pods, water spills over the edge and soaks the fascia, siding and the soil against your foundation.
How often
Most Williamson County homes need gutters cleaned at least twice a year: late fall after the leaves drop and late spring after seed pods and pollen. Homes under mature oaks or pines often need three or four cleanings.
Warning signs
Water sheeting over the edge during rain, plants growing in the gutter, sagging sections, stains on the siding below, or a downspout that doesn't flow during a storm.
Don't forget the downspouts
A clean gutter with a clogged downspout still overflows. Flush each downspout with a hose and make sure it drains at least a few feet from the foundation.
What you can try yourself
- Use a stable ladder with a stabilizer arm, and have a second person there.
- Scoop debris by hand or with a gutter scoop into a bucket.
- Flush with a hose from the far end toward the downspout.
What to avoid
- Leaning ladders on the gutter itself.
- Working on a roof or ladder in wet weather.
- Pressure washing inside gutters from the ground. It sprays debris everywhere.
When to call a professional
Two-story homes, steep lots and anyone uncomfortable on a ladder should hire it out. Ladder falls are one of the most common home injuries. See our gutter cleaning service.
What customers say
"I recently hired 1st Class Pressure Cleaning to clean our house exterior, windows, and gutters, and I couldn't be happier with the results. The house looks amazing! The owner, Curtis was professional, punctual, and very responsive to all of my messages. On top of the great service, the price was incredibly fair and reasonable. I will definitely be using his services again in the future. Five stars!"

EDDIE W. · Google Review
"I used First Class Pressure Cleaning to seal my aggregate driveway and they did a fantastic job. It was in rough shape as we had never sealed it before. Lots of salt damage as well from trying to de-ice the last winter storm. It looks so much better now. They even came back the next day for touch-ups on some areas where the winter salts had worn through to the concrete. Very happy with this company and the work they’ve done!"
