How to Clean Composite Decking (Trex, TimberTech and More)
Composite decking is sold as low-maintenance, and it is compared to wood. But in Middle Tennessee's shade and humidity, it still grows mold and collects pollen, leaves and grease.
Follow the manufacturer
Trex and other brands publish care guides with approved cleaners and pressure limits. Many allow a pressure washer only with a fan tip at limited pressure. Some older capped boards are more sensitive. Using the wrong method can void the warranty.
Mold on composite
Mold grows on the organic debris sitting on composite, and older uncapped boards can grow it in the wood fibers too. A composite-safe cleaner and soft brush usually lifts it.
Grease and tannin stains
Grill grease needs a degreaser approved for composite. Brown spots from leaves are tannins and usually fade with a composite cleaner.
What you can try yourself
- Sweep between boards so water drains.
- Use a cleaner approved by your decking brand.
- Scrub along the grain with a soft brush and rinse.
What to avoid
- Wood deck brighteners not approved for composite.
- Metal shovels and scrapers.
When to call a professional

"Estimate process was easy and straightforward. Communication via text and email to setup and confirm the work. Guys came when they said they would and did a great job. Fence and deck were covered in algae and cleaned up great. The patio was mismatched already but it looks amazing now. They hit the windows too which made a big difference. Final invoice came via email right after the work was completed."
