How to Clean Bird Droppings Off Siding, Porches and Concrete
Porches, eaves, dock areas and storefront awnings collect droppings from swallows, pigeons and starlings. Besides the mess, droppings are acidic enough to stain paint and concrete if left for long.
Safety first
Dried droppings can release dust carrying fungal spores. Wet the area down before cleaning so nothing becomes airborne, and wear gloves and a mask for large accumulations.
Clean, then deter
Cleaning without removing what attracts the birds means doing it again next week. Close off nesting ledges, knock down empty nests outside nesting season, and add deterrents where birds roost.
Protected species
Many songbirds, including barn swallows, are protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act. Active nests shouldn't be removed. Wait until the season ends.
What you can try yourself
- Soak dried droppings with water and a mild detergent for 10–15 minutes.
- Scrape gently with a plastic scraper and rinse.
- Disinfect the area afterward.
What to avoid
- Dry sweeping or blowing dried droppings.
- Removing active nests of protected birds.
When to call a professional
Businesses with heavy buildup on awnings, loading docks or parking decks should use professional cleaning with proper wastewater handling. See our commercial pressure washing service.
What customers say
"First Class Cleaning washed our entire church building roof to ground. The building had built up quite a bit of algae and mildew over the years. It now looks brand new. The guys worked with our preschool and ministry schedule. They got the job done quickly and at a fair price."
